Find its shape

An idea becomes a commission when the finished piece is clear enough that both of us will recognise it. Together we settle what it must do, what it must survive, and what will prove that it works.

You do not need to arrive with the design already solved. Finding the simplest sound form is part of the work. The commission may be small or ambitious; it only needs an ending.

Make the whole thing

Before construction, we think through the purpose, the internal order, the difficult cases, and the failures that can be prevented by design.

Then we make it in working stages and test it against the real material and difficult conditions it will meet. Each decision belongs to the whole piece, not merely to the next thing that must be made to work.
